When I started out on the Internet, many, many years ago, I uploaded quite some HTML pages to experiment how things work. You know, stuff like colors, tables, menu's, images, lists, fonts, block elements and that sort of things.
Soon I Discovered The Common Problems
Very soon, I discovered you had to seriously optimize your web pages them to achieve high search engine rankings. It wasn't that difficult back then, but a lot has changed since. These days it's not easy to get on the first search engines results page (SERP), unless you know exactly what you're doing.
Anyway, I uploaded one page after another, carefully trying to keep my sitemap currrent, so each and every page that saw the light would be indexed.
But I experimented a lot (it's called testing) and soon I lost track of which pages were updated with new menu items and other common areas and which weren't. And the problem rapidly became bigger and bigger when I started other sites.
You see, every website has a lot of coding that is the same on all pages. Examples are the navigation menu, headers and footers. So, if you could only put these in a seperate file and call that file from within the page when you needed them, then that would make my webdesigner life much easier. After all, if I had to change one thing in the navigation menu, I only would have to do so in ONE place, NOT on all pages!
That problem increased with the introduction of AdSense. I'm sure you'll recognize that one:
copy that code into every page or .....
make it a seperate file and call that file when needed?
The choice was easy.
Solution 1: Save TONS of TIME Maintaining Websites!
I searched the Net and found out how you can create files that could be called from within a HTML page. It was done by something called SSI (Server Side Includes - Included files residing on the server, but you may forget all this!).
The only set-back was, that all pages had to end in shtml instead of html, but hey, it would save me a lot of time, right?
So, I implemented that at my main site. I put my navigation menu, headers and footers in seperate files and included thes files in the page I was creating at the moment I needed them.
When that page was ready, all I did was adding a link to it in my navigation menu and presto ...
the link would show on every page of my site with just the click of a button.
I was thrilled when I personally experienced that this system indeed saved me tons of time!
Solution 2: First Things First: Get Your CONTENT Indexed!
But as always, I'm sure you recognize that, you want more.
Like a date on top of your page or some kind of personalization.
Yes, you can do such things using Javascript, but that takes up a lot of coding at the top of your pages and that's something I want to avoid. Because it dilutes the value of the content that comes after that.
Besided that, search engines can't interpret Javascript. It's only clutter for them that they have to wade through. And that's a bad thing.
When building webpages, my intention always have been that content should come first!
Because THAT'S what matters, not the fancy coding.
High value content is what takes you to the top of the Search Engines and that's why it needs to be close to the top of every web page so that search engines can recognize what's important and what your page is about!
THAT'S why I'm using PHP right now. It inserts the end result in the pages, not the coding.
Mind you, I'm not an expert in this, but I DO know how to use its features to benefit from them.
I know for a fact, that lots of people, because they are not familiar with PHP, are afraid to use it. Well, let me assure you that any page ending in .htm or .html can be changed to .php and work perfectly! In my pages I don't screw around with heavy PHP applications, just some bacis features that are easy to understand and deliver great benefits.
And the end result is: the content is shown first! That's exactly what search engine like!
Solution 3: Make It Easy For The Search Engines!
Because content is so important, I also switched to using Cascading Style Sheets (CSS). Simply said, they allow you to define the lay-out of your page and the lay-out of elements on it.
The benefits of using CSS are, that you can get rid of tables, table elements like rows and columns and all the dirty FONT coding that you had to put into almost every line of coding.
The result of that is, again, less coding on your page and more 'real-estate' for your content. Another plus!
And finally I also switched to XHTML. It's the new HTML that we've used before
to code our pages. It's more compatible with new developments and creates crisp
and clean coding than the older versions.
This may be a small benefit,
but hey, I take all I can to reach my ultimate goal.
And that goal is ...
