"Website Ranking" | ||||||||

January 20, 2004 A few weeks ago I asked you about the most important topic that you want to see covered in this newsletter. One of the most burning issues that are on your mind seems to be website rankings. I've written an article about that issue in the past. Here's the link: Search Engine Positioning. And don't forget to read about My Web Page Template I've also added an extra article, containing a free template for a web page. (All links will open a seperate window. Close it when you're done and you'll be back here.) Since website ranking is an important issue these days and you want to get as high a ranking as possible, today I publish an article about it. Enjoy. Case Your website ranking The ranking of your website depends on many criteria. Before I continue let me explain that I'm in now way a search engine specialist. Because that's a full time job. If you want an authority on the issue, just hop over to Danny Sullivan's Search Engine Watch. So again I'm not a search engine ranking specialist. I just read about it and apply 'common sense'. From this perspective you should read this article. So how does website ranking works? I'll try to explain that with an example. Let's say, once or twice a week your family wants you to make pancakes. Everyone likes them because they are soooo good. Your grandmother learned you how to make them. (Don't laugh! See a life example of a similar situation here.) Now, let's make a website about..... pancakes. Hmmm! The idea behind website ranking. Search engines are websites with databases containing information about web pages such as name, address (URL), subject, links and popularity. On the other site we have people on the Net searching for information. To find that info, they use the giant search engine's databases. It works like the catalogues in your library. You want to find a book about a certain topic and the librarians have made a catalogue with titles and contents to make it easy for you to search. There are search engines like Yahoo and DMOZ that work exactly like the catalogue in your library. Often they are called directories, because their content is reviewed and categorized by real living persons. Because this is so much work, there are also search engines that have automated this task. They use software programs called spiders that search the web for new pages to add to their databases. Once they find a new page they'll gather information from it and store it in the databases. Althoug this process is completely automated and very, very complex, you should never forget that this software is written by .... humans. The software does exactly what these humans have programmed the software to do. And these humans think like librarians to provide their customers the best results possible. Still, it's software that has to do the work. So if you write your first page starting with Hello and welcome to my site. I know a lot about home made pancakes. My grandmother learned me how to make them.the software will read that and tries to figure out what this page is about. Words like 'a', 'you', 'or', 'and', 'I' and some more are deleted, because they are too common. So this text is interpreted as: "Hello welcome site. know lot about home made pancakes. grandmother learned make them." That doesn't make a lot of sense. But if you put home made pancakes in bold, the software has an indication that these words may mean something important. If you precede the sentences above with a header like this <H1>home made pancakes</H1>the software has 2 occurences of your main word, one in a header and one in bold. Now, that's more like it. If you put a link in the next paragraph to another page called pancakes-jam.html and you put home made pancakes with jam in the link text, like this: <H1>home made pancakes</H1>the software even may conclude your site is probably about pancakes! So, what I'm trying to say is: To achieve good website rankings make it easy for the software to interpret what your site is about! Although this may seem very obvious, in reality it's a bit more complicated. Because, in order to make a decent web page, we have to add HTML coding around our texts. The software deletes this coding, but it makes the whole process more complex. And it's very tempting to add extra coding, Javascripts, graphics, tables, floating menus, frames and flash applications. Eh eh. Everything you add to plain text is deviating the software from its main goal: to index your pages containing the right keywords so visitors searching for them can find them. Read that again. Remember it and apply it when you build new pages. They will have a better chance of high ranking. Below are some more tips you can use to achieve better website rankings. But if you're really serious about this I suggest you read a really outstanding book called "Rankings Revealed" written by search engine expert Sean Burns. It's packed with valuable information, easy to read, concise and will lead to better rankings. Theme Based First your site should be 'theme-based', which means it should be about a certain topic. So, if you are in the gardening business, do not add anything about gardening. Just pancakes. See the Search Engine Positioning for more information. Not too broad, because you will have too much competition then. Go to Google and perform a search for pancakes. As I looked just a minute ago Google came up with almost 900,000 sites. Wow, lot of competition here. Let's try 'home made pancakes'. That's better. Just over 200,000 sites. Maybe you should go for this keyword. Keyword Rich Since the site is about pancakes, let's not call it johndoe.com. Instead, use all the keywords you can think of that are related to pancakes. So, if you want to select a domain name go for something like www.home-made-pancakes.com (that one was still free just a minute ago). Write one page per keyword. Use the keyword at several places. Refer to my free web page template to build your keyword rich pages. Use keywords in your links when you refer visitors to pages within your website. This is made easy when your pages are named after your keywords. Also use the same keywords in the description of the link. See my reference to the free web page template above. That's exactly the name of the page AND the content of the article. Linking it together.
In his book "Rankings Revealed", search engine expert Sean Burns explains every ranking secret in detail. He also tells you what exaclty Google's Page Rank means and how you can achieve better rankings using link exchanges. I can highly recommend it. That's it for today. Wish you success.
